New to Ukrainian, or wondering what to study next? This step-by-step guide brings together free Ukrainian lessons, reading practice, vocabulary with audio, and books for more structured learning.
Created by Ukrainian language teacher and author Yuliia Pozniak, this roadmap will help you choose suitable resources and learn Ukrainian at your own pace.
Where should you start?
Choose the starting point that matches your current skills:
- Complete beginner: You cannot read Ukrainian letters yet. Start with Step 1: Learn the alphabet.
- Beginning reader (around A1–A2): You know the alphabet and want to read short Ukrainian texts. Start with Step 2: Reading and listening, together with Step 3.
- Vocabulary practice (around A1–A2): You want to remember and actively use everyday Ukrainian words. Combine Step 3: Vocabulary games with the reading practice in Step 2.
- Beyond the basics (around A2–B1): You can understand simple texts and are ready for longer reading passages and dialogues. Go to Step 4: Intermediate reading.
Tip: Steps 2 and 3 work best together. Read and listen to Ukrainian texts, then reinforce the vocabulary with games and exercises. You do not need to finish Step 2 before starting Step 3.
The levels are approximate learning guidelines, not a formal CEFR assessment.
Step 1: Learn the Ukrainian Alphabet and Start Reading
Best for: Complete beginners who are new to Ukrainian or the Cyrillic alphabet.
Your first goal is to recognize Ukrainian letters, understand their sounds, and begin reading simple words aloud.
Start with short lessons, repeat words after a native speaker, and gradually practise reading syllables and sentences.

Short texts are an excellent way to learn Ukrainian words in context. Instead of memorizing isolated words, you see how they are used in meaningful sentences.

- Learn the vocabulary. Review the words at the beginning of a chapter in 100 Easy Ukrainian Texts.
- Read and listen. Work through the short texts, listening to the native-speaker recordings while following the written text.
- Practise the words. Choose related vocabulary games in Ukrainian Language Word Games for Beginners to reinforce what you have learned.
